PORTABLE EMISSION MONITORING SYSTEMS (PEMS)
INTRODUCTION
Conventional PUC Monitoring systems
Presently, all vehicles need to undergo a periodic emission check (3 months/ 6 months) at PUC Centers at Fuel Stations and Private Garages which are authorised to check the vehicles. In addition, transport vehicles need to undergo an annual fitness check carried out by RTOs for emissions, safety and road-worthiness.
The objective of reducing pollution not achieved to a large extent by the present system. Some reasons for this are :-
  • Independent centers do not follow rigorous procedures due to inadequate training.
  • Equipment not subjected to periodic calibration by independent authority.
  • Lack of professionalism has led to malpractice.
  • Tracking system of vehicles failing to meet norms non-existent.
ATTRIBUTE
  • A novel photonic system AUM PEMS was developed to monitor real time pollution by vehicles. Laser scans the Motions, Gases and Particles.
  • Thus enabling the remote detector to gather relevant information as per Euro VI/ BHARAT STAGE VI (REAL DRIVING EMISSION [RDE])and and Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).
  • The single system can monitor all the important pollutants mentioned in BHARAT VI - Carbon monoxide (CO) and Carbon dioxide (CO2), Nitric oxide (NO) and Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOX = NO + NO2), Total hydrocarbons (THCs), Methane (CH4), Non-methane Hydrocarbons (NMHC), Particulates down to the ultrafine level at one go, with higher accuracies and sensitivities and without any constrain of speed of vehicle.
  • AUM_PEMS also collects Exhaust mass flow rate, Ambient Pressure, Temperature and Moisture of the target emission. AUM PEMS also collects speed of Vehicle.
  • AUM is portable and data collection of Moving Vehicle at a speed of 120km/h.
FEATURES
Features Benefits
Continuous monitoring (AUM PEMS)

AUM is the only continuous monitoring system which can be easily set up. AUM PEMS monitors multiple gases in real time. There is not limit of gases that can be monitored at same time. Gases monitoring can be customized as per need.

Measures and Monitors :-

  • Carbon monoxide (CO) and Carbon dioxide (CO2),
  • Nitric oxide (NO) and Nitrogen dioxide (NO2),
  • Oxides of Nitrogen (NO x = NO + NO2),
  • Total hydrocarbons (THCs), Methane (CH4), Non-methane Hydrocarbons (NMHC),
  • Particulates down to the ultrafine level at one go, with higher accuracies and sensitivities and without any constrain of speed of vehicle.
Meteorological Measurement

Measures meteorological factors like temperature, humidity, wind parameters (speed, direction, pressure, velocity), precipitation that show how pollutants are transferred from source to recipient.

Contactless & Calibration

AUM PEMS is contactless and measures the gases from exhaust from a distance. Conventional system need routine calibration AUM PEMS has no such constraints.

APPLICATIONS
  • PASSENGER CARS
  • LIGHT COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
  • HEAVY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
  • NON-ROAD MOBILE MACHINERY (NRMM)
  • AIRCRAFT
    • Aircrafts' high-altitude emissions have a greater global warming impact than they would if the emissions were released at ground level. AUM can measure and monitor contrail.
    • Aircraft emit staggering amounts of co2, the most prevalent manmade greenhouse gas.
    • In addition to co2, aircraft emit nitrogen oxides, known as nox, which contribute to the formation of ozone, another greenhouse gas. emissions of nox at high altitudes result in greater concentrations of ozone than ground-level emissions.
    • Aircraft also emit water vapor at high altitudes, creating condensation trails or "contrails"  visible cloud lines that form in cold, humid atmospheres and contribute to the warming impacts of aircraft emissions. the persistent formation of contrails is associated with increased cirrus cloud cover, which also warms the earth's surface.
  • MARINE VESSELS
    • The International Maritime Organization (IMO), has mandated to prevent air pollution from vessels both globally and within designated sea areas, known as Emission Control Areas (ECAs).
    • These regulations require control on SO2, CO2 and NOX emissions.
    • Ship yards, ship owners and marine Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) manufacturers are looking to equip vessels with continuous gas analyzers for Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) to measure all the regulated pollutants (SO2, CO2, NOX) and to optimize fuel consumption (CO, O2) on board at the same time.
    • Dust is a critical measurement for marine vessel operators. The effects on health due to airborne particulate matter is well established and there is a duty on all operators - cruise, commercial to ensure levels are below legislative limits. The visible aspect of dust emissions can also play a part in the perception of marine travel and transport as a green industry.
    • AUM PEMS allows vessels to stay compliant with current and upcoming regulations.
